![]() The game features two relationship meters, the first determines if a survivor can be recruited, and the second dictates if they can be controlled. The player can interact with survivors outside of their group: trading with them, helping them or recruiting them. They can be obtained by scavenging or trading with NPCs. Part of the game is balancing the use of resources: food, medicine, ammo and construction materials. The player can choose from several locations to build a base, then reinforce and improve it with various facilities like watch towers, gardens, sleeping quarters, kitchens, workshops, medical bays, etc. The game world is 16 square kilometers, 8 square kilometers of which is playable. The player is in charge of a small group of survivors and can either follow the storyline or perform tasks that ensure their community's survival. State of Decay contains elements of third person combat and simulation (building base and outposts). Here the player character stands atop a tower and scouts for possible survival camps and places that may contain supplies. Gameplay State of Decay emphasizes utilizing existing resources, which are finite. Upcoming State of Decay 3 was announced at Xbox's 2020 Games Showcase and is currently in production. An updated version, State of Decay 2: Juggernaut Edition, launched on and overhauled the original game's graphics and added a new map. The game introduced cooperative multiplayer. State of Decay 2 was announced at Xbox's E3 2016. A remastered version called the Year-One Survival Edition was released on Apfor Windows and Xbox One with mixed reviews. A Windows version was released on September 20, 2013, via Steam's Early Access, with a release following on November 5, 2013. It was released for the Xbox 360 on June 5, 2013, and was met with positive reviews. The game combines elements of shooters, stealth, role-playing and strategy games and the game challenges players to survive by exploring, scavenging, and fighting the undead. It places emphasis on how the player's leaderships skills fare against an onslaught of problems, such as diminishing survival resources, group trust and morale, zombie extermination, base defenses, and people's lives. If you’ve already squeezed every last drop of fun out of this game on 360 or PC, though, the additions here are minimal.State of Decay is an action video game developed by Undead Labs and published by Microsoft Studios. Is it worth double-dipping if you already played the heck out of it on 360? If you haven’t played the expansion packs, I’d say yes - particularly when existing State of Decay owners get $10 off YOSE’s $30 asking price. Everything I said in my original review still rings true: This is a special game, and captures the post-zombie-outbreak survival experience I’ve always wanted to play. But, please, do not judge this book by its cover. At least the annoying screen tearing has been rectified. Even running in 1080p with higher-resolution textures and a few other minor cosmetic upgrades, Year One Survival Edition still very much looks like an Xbox 360 game. Clipping bugs, warping characters, and frame rate problems all still plague State of Decay on Xbox One. Submerged Jared Petty Unfortunately, being re-released on a more powerful console has not cured its technical and presentation-based ills like I’d hoped (and reasonably expected) it would. Each is clearly meant to be played after you complete the main game, but it’s refreshing that neither is simply more of the same. Each tells a side story with a different gameplay angle: the former being a sandbox-emphasizing, challenge-oriented romp, and the latter letting you play from the perspective of the military - a group at odds with the player in the primary campaign. Year One Survival Edition also bundles in State of Decay’s two excellent expansion packs: Breakdown and Lifeline. That may sound like an intimidating list, but through an easily understood and managed interface (press up on the D-pad to access it anytime), Decay’s elements are intuitive and digestible. You’ll need to manage: relationships with fellow survivors, your group’s resources, injuries to you and your group, your backpack weight, your influence, your fatigue, and more. It is, in fact, a systems-based role-playing game with permanent (and sometimes far-reaching) consequences for your characters. It’s neither a pure action game nor your typical open-world action-adventure. ![]() It’s deep, raw, unforgiving, and even emotional - all in the very best of ways. Coming back to it on the Xbox One for the Year One Survival Edition, I realized I’d forgotten how much I love State of Decay.
